HEALTH

The Health Section is a guide to help keep you and your family safe and healthy. It offers tips on good health practices, healthy eating and other ways to keep yourself in great condition. The Health Section also includes information about health insurance companies and proper health care.

Family Health

One of the best ways to ensure that both you and your family are eating and behaving healthy is to make good health practices part of your family schedule. If you positively reinforce these activities by making them fun, the rest of your family will be more likely to do these things on their own - because they WANT to. Try these tips:
  • Schedule family dinners. Have everyone eat together most nights of the week. Not only is it helpful for good family mental health, moreover you can control what your children are eating and ensure that they aren't eating junk food or skipping meals.
  • Take regular family trips to a park or somewhere you can be active. Schedule a weekend game of soccer or baseball, and make sure everyone can participate. Exercising with your kids as part of a game or activity makes it fun.
  • Limit the amount of time you and your family use the computer or watch TV. This way, they will be more likely to get outside and use their bodies instead of turning into a couch potato!
Follow these tips and you will be eating well, exercising regularly, and getting away from the TV screen, along with your kids! Check out this article from kidshealth.com about healthy family meals.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is essential for protecting your family and your finances. Just a few days in the hospital after an injury or illness can cost uninsured individuals tens of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, there are many ways to find health insurance for you and your family.

One of the most common ways of receiving health insurance is through your employer. Many full time jobs offer benefits that include insurance plans with low or no monthly fees, called premiums. Ask your employer about insurance plans, especially if you work for a large business or corporation. If your job does not come with health benefits, it may be worthwhile to try to find a job that does, even if it means taking a slight pay cut.

Many people purchase health insurance directly from insurance companies. There are many insurance companies that offer a host of different insurance plans and packages. The type of service you receive will determine how much your monthly premium is and how much you are covered. Most large insurance providers now offer quick and simple quotes on their webpages, making it easy to get an idea of how much you will have to spend. Buying insurance directly from providers is generally more expensive than other options, but it can provide you with more flexibility as well.

Additionally, government programs provide many Americans with health insurance. If you don't have other options, you may be eligible for federal programs, like Medicaid or state programs that offer inexpensive or free health insurance. Because these programs are expensive to maintain, they are reserved mostly for families who cannot afford insurance on their own. Also, you must be a legal U.S. resident to apply to many of these programs.

Finally, health insurance can be very expensive and time-consuming to maintain. However, because of the myriad of options available to Americans, it's becoming easier and easier to find affordable coverage. Don't be discouraged by a single quote; if you search around, you will find a plan that works for you and your family.
