GOVERNMENT
The Government Section reveals important aspects of the United States Government that all US citizens should know. The basic tenets of American democracy, voter rights and responsibilities, how to register to vote and the different positions that candidates run for are explained.
Democracy
The United States of America is a representative democracy. That is, citizens elect public officials to create public policy and run the government. These government officials are vulnerable to public opinion; the people decide what the government does. The government has a great effect on many aspects of American life, especially on one aspect that affects us all: the economy. So, political participation through voting is a very important part of American life, so much so that it is often described not as a right, but as a duty.
Registering to Vote
In order to vote in political election, you must register in your county. Usually any local county municipal office or library will have information on how to register. In order to register, you will need proof of citizenship, proof of residency and proof that you are at least 18 years old. The rules vary from city to city, so be sure you fully understand the registration rules in your municipality. Information about national registration laws and registration forms can be found at www.register-vote.com.
